Artificial Intelligence - or AI, for short - is being integrated into all areas of our lives. From computer chatbots to voice assistance, this new technology is being used to give us even easier access to information than before. Many of the cars here at Prestige Cars Kent are now getting AI infotainment technology, so check them out today

However, police forces are also using AI to make their speed detection equipment even more focused. In this article, we’re going to be exploring just what AI new speed cameras are and how they might change driving.

What are the AI new speed cameras?

Artificial Intelligence speed cameras are a new form of detection being operated by some police forces. While regular cameras can still detect speed, these new versions can tell when a car is speeding and instantly capture the car’s key information - such as make, model and number plate - alongside a high-definition photo of the person driving and their passenger. At the same time, these cameras can run checks on whether or not the vehicle is taxed and insured.

In addition, AI-powered cameras can also check to see if the driver is using their mobile phone and whether or not they’re wearing a seatbelt.

Are any in operation within the UK?

Currently, AI-powered cameras haven’t been put into widespread use in the UK, though there have been several tests to see how they’d work here. Trials of the technology in 2023 saw over 300 drivers caught for speeding or not wearing their seatbelts in just two weeks across a stretch of road in Devon, while the cameras have also been put to the test with success in Manchester.

More recently, an AI camera trial in January 2025 detected 849 traffic offences during its two-week trial by Humberside.

Are more planned?

It’s likely that as the technology gains momentum, it’ll be used by a greater number of police forces in the UK. AI speed cameras are currently being trialled in areas such as Durham, Staffordshire and North Wales, while Avon and Somerset have a trial planned for roll-out.

Do humans have any involvement?

Though artificial intelligence might be used in speed cameras, they still need some form of human involvement at present. Cameras cannot instantly issue a court order or fine, as they need to be reviewed by a police officer to ensure that everything is correct.

This process helps to avoid any errors brought on by technical issues and allows police to better study individual cases. Once reviewed, the captured footage can be used as evidence to issue a speeding fine or court order.
